I thought this might be interesting for anyone building their own site. Also, I like to be totally transparent about how things work.
The Cost of Running the Beautiful Voyager
This software helps me build and host my site.
Initially I paid $12/month for the site, but I recently upgraded to a "business" plan in order to have more logins for other contributors to log themselves into the site, so I now pay $18/month.
In addition to site costs, I pay $110 a year for "G-Suite" -- which is how I get my email address at bevoya.com.
Total cost: $28/month
You are reading this right now on the forum.
I paid $100 for an initial installation of this discussion forum, and now pay $10/month in server costs.
Total cost: $18/month
My newsletter service.
There are free mail services, but I love the UX and the community of Revue.
Total cost $5/month.
I edit a publication on Medium called Invisible Illness. It currently have 25K followers. As a result, a lot of people find Beautiful Voyager through Medium (it's usually our #1 referrer). I am a paid subscriber to Medium for $5 a month to show support and leadership on that platform.
Total cost $5/month.
This was a charge for the domain hosting of bevoya.com, but I recently moved this over to Squarespace, so I will up the Squarespace price and kill this soon (when I figure out how much it came down to. Squarespace is slightly more expensive, but it also has much better UI, which I really appreciate).
Annual cost of $15.17
In early June, I launched a new place for readers to buy products or set up their own shops on Bevoya. It's called a marketplace. As a result, my costs increased:
Shopify subscription for basic plan = $29/month
Plus $20/month add-on to allow sellers to set their own shipping rates.
In addition to a Shopify plan, I need an app to convert my shop into a marketplace.
The app costs = $45/month
Total marketplace hosting costs = $59/month
TOTAL COSTS POST-MARKETPLACE $145/month.
My goal for the marketplace is to make at least $145 each month. Once I achieve that, I'll use profits to grow the business. When I can, I'll spend money on targeted advertising on Google Adwords.
